Maria Moroka Game Reserve

See Blue Crane at the Maria Moroka Game Reserve near Bloemfontein, South AfricaThe Maria Moroka Game Reserve is located 70km east of Bloemfontein near the western-most border with Lesotho, near the town of Thaba Nchu, and at the foot of the Thaba Nchu mountain – or ‘Black Mountain’.

The reserve is named after a heroine of the Apartheid struggle, Dr Maria Moroka. The reserve encompasses a grassy, gently undulating area around the Montloatse Setlogelo Dam.

Animals that can be seen include Zebra and White Rhino, a variety of large and small antelope species, including the iconic Eland and Red Hartebeest, Black Wildebeest and Springbok, and small predator such as African Caracal (Rooikat). South Africa’s National Bird, the Blue Crane, is also resident at the Maria Moroka Reserve.

The Dam supports South Africa’s National Bird, the Blue Crane, and over a hundred other bird species have been recorded on the reserve.

There is an 8km hiking trail up the Black Mountain. Other activities that can be enjoyed on the reserve include picknicking and boating on the dam, walking trails and guided game drives.

Luxury accommodation is available at the Protea Hotel Black Mountain next to the reserve, but there are also self catering chalets on the reserve itself.
