Mangaung Cultural Route, Bloemfontein

The ANC FlagThe Mangaung Cultural Route is a guided township tour with particularly poignant points of interest relating to the ANC and current politics.

Mangaung is now another name for Bloemfontein and also the greater municipal area, which includes nearby Thaba Nchu, but the tour focuses on the Manguang Township just outside of Bloemfontein which was the birthplace of the African National Congress and as such played a pivotal societal role in the struggle against Apartheid.

The Cultural Tour was recently “developed to promote entrepreneurship in a previously disadvantaged community, tracing the colonial history of the area, the period of the liberation struggle and what’s been happening in these communities post-apartheid. It has developed into a lively township tour that also introduces one to the vibrancy of the night life in Mangaung.” (ref)

The tour starts in the Bloemfontein CBD and includes a number of culturally and politically significant locations, including the homes of the ANC founder members, as well as local jazz entertainment spots and restaurants.

The best time to enjoy this tour is in October, during the ten day Macufe Mangaung African Cultural Festival which takes place in Mangaung.
