Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail, Limpopo

The Magoebaskloof Hiking Trail runs through the densely forested Magoebaskloof between Tzaneen and Haenertsberg in the Limpopo.

The full trail, called the Magoebaskloof Big is a 5 night 5 day circular trail, but many routes also allow for 2 to 4 day trails that are also less demanding. The 2 day trails are considered family trails, but the 5 day trails have some tough sections that demand at least one experienced hiker in the group and a good level of fitness. These are graded as difficult.

The trail moves through the Woodbush and De Hoek Plantations, but most of it is through very pretty mountain indigenous cloud forest, characterised by lots of ferns, fungi, mountain streams, waterfalls (including the famous Debengeni Falls), pools and the magnificent 5m Modjaji cycads that this part of the Limpopo Province is known for. There are also dams and historical sites on the routes.

Six huts can accommodate groups of up to either 16 or 24, and are either old forestry buildings or purpose built trail cabins. They all have braai facilities and the De Hoek and Broederstroom huts have electricity and hot water.

The Magoebaskloof is a high rainfall area, so wet weather gear is an essential precaution year round. The wettest months are October to March.

All the trails are self-guided and there is a per person per night charge. Bookings & Info
