Mafikeng Game Reserve, North West Province
The Mafikeng Game Reserve is also referred to as the Home of the White Rhino thanks to a breeding programme on the reserve. The reserve is small – only 5000ha, can be covered by vehicle in a couple of hours, and offers guaranteed viewings of these magnificent but threatened animals – the 2nd largest land mammals on Earth after the African elephant.
The Mafikeng Game Reserve is also where the rhino tagging system was developed to counter poaching, and this combined with its breeding programme, size and ease of viewing, makes it white rhino sanctuary.
Despite its small size, the reserve is also home to 2000 head of antelope and other plains species such as giraffe. Like most small game reserves that are involved in the breeding and relocation of animals for conservation, there are no predators, and this makes it an ideal self-drive, very relaxing and rich in game-viewing few hours, with or without kids in the car.
