Madikwe Game Reserve, North-West Province

Madikwe Game Reserve is a malaria free Big 5 Private Game Reserve in the very north of South Africa,  just south of the Botswana border and 20km from Gabarone.

This  75 000ha reserve is distinguished by a higher than normal diversity of species thanks to its location in a transition zone between Kalahari thornveld and Lowveld bushveld, a large population of elephants and a large wild dog herd. Another distinction that has recently come to light is the discovery of the world’s first ‘strawberry leopard’ – a leopard with slightly pink skin and beige spots due to a genetic condition. This leopard was in fact first spotted 3 years ago, but a photograph of the animal hit the world headline’s in April 2012. It is a fully grown male, and is evidently doing well despite its unusual coat – and Madikwe is home to the world’s only known ‘Pink Panther.’

The reserve is only accessible to guests, who stay in luxury game lodges on the reserve. There are no camping facilities. Game drives and activities are oganised by each privately owned lodge.

Madikwe is also known for great birding! More on Madikwe and birding on Madikwe or read the Getaway article on Madikwe Game Reserve.

Getting there: From Rustenburg take the N4 to Zeerust, then turn north for Madikwe. Total travelling time is just under 2 hours.
