Lotheni Nature Reserve, Drakensberg
Lotheni Nature Reserve is situated in the Mkhomazi Wilderness Area in the southern part of the UKhalhamba-Drakensberg Park. This beautiful reserve is 3980 Ha in extent and is notable for its excellent hiking trails. The scenery is spectacular and includes a number of waterfalls including Jacob’s Ladder which cascades over many tiers down the mountain slope. Prominent peaks are clearly visible on the escarpment.
There is a diversity of game and birdlife including mountain reedbuck, grey reedbuck, eland, grey duiker, oribi, Cape clawless otter, mongoose and baboon, as well as black stork, verreaux’s eagle, bearded vulture, lanner falcon, Cape vulture and giant kingfisher. About 16Km of the Lotheni River is stocked with trout and only fly fishing is permissible on payment of rod fees at the park office. Mountain biking is also allowed in certain designated areas.
Accommodation is available either at Skimes Cottage, a converted farm cottage for 10 people, or at Lotheni Hutted Camp consisting of 12 self-contained chalets.
Directions: From N3 South follow the route via Underberg and Himeville, after which the tar ends. The reserve is 45 km from Himeville on a dirt road. From the north, follow the route via Nottingham Road. Turn left at the Nottingham Road police station onto the Sani Pass/ Vergelegen road. _+ 62 km for Nottingham Road, turn right at the Lotheni Store. The entrance to the park is 10 km from this point.
