L’Ormarins Wine Estate, Franschhoek, Western Cape

L'Ormarins Wine Estate, Franschhoek, Western Cape

L’Ormarins Wine Estate is the main winery in the Antonij Rupert Wines group. Situated in Franschhoek on the slopes of the Groot Drakenstein Mountains, the different soil and climatic conditions of the various slopes make it possible to grow different varietals – Syrah on the warmer northern and steeper slopes, Sauvignon Blanc on the cooler eastern slopes and merlot on cool slopes in soil with a higher water retention. Cabernet Sauvignon and, Pinot Grigio, Viognier, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc are also planted.

The philosophy at L’Ormarins is that the character of the wine comes from the soil and climate working together. The wine making process should treat the grapes in such a way as to ensure that the true natural characteristics of the grapes and the vines should come through.

There are two attractions on L’Ormarins wine farm. Nearer to the entrance there is the Franschhoek Motor Museum; the museum has over 300 cars in the collection, of which 80 are on display at any given time. From the reception you are shuttled to the Chardonnay Tasting Room, en route you will enjoy spectacular views of the farm and valley. The tasting is a formal, informative, seated tasting.
