Kraai River Pass from Barkly East to New England or Wartrail
Off the R58, about 3.3kms west of Barkly East turn right onto a gravel road and at the summit, decide if you want to turn right to Wartrail or left to New England.
Cross a pretty dressed-sandstone bridge over the Kraai River, a tributary of the Orange River – this is a favourite spot for river rafting and birding and also a good place to witness the spectacle of small-mouthed yellowfish running during three weeks around February and March as they swarm up the river to spawn.
The road hugs the east bank of the river as it climbs. Watch out for the railway reverses on the mountain slope ahead of you before the road veers to the right.
