Kluitjieskraal Mountain Bike Route, Wolseley
The Kluitjieskraal MTB route, just outside Wolseley, is set in magnificent scenery – forests, waterfalls and water crossings are all part of this beautiful 41km circular trail. The trail is mainly set in the State Forest, so fires are dangerous and keep a lookout for working lumber trucks.
The route is challenging and well known for its steep uphill sections, some of which climb to 400m above sea level, followed by rocky, technical descents on narrow jeep tracks/single track. The route crosses the Waterval Mountains twice, through some water crossings that can become quite swift in winter after rain, so be prepared for wet feet. However, after rain, the waterfalls are an amazing sight.
Although the river water is drinkable, it is a good idea to take enough water and food, as this is a hard ride. It should take about 2-3 hours. There are no ablution facilities and cell phone reception is intermittent.
There are some alternative distance options on this trail – 14km, 21km and 63km routes, so have a look at the map and discuss these with the Demars Bike Shop where you need to pick up your permit and map. Directions: Take the N1 from Cape Town. Before reaching Worcester, turn left on the R43, direction Ceres. Turn right at the T-junction at Bergsig Wine Cellar and then left again to Wolseley. Proceed to the Pine Valley /Voortrekker Road Corner and turn left towards the railway bridge (50m down the road), cross the railway bridge to the T-junction. Turn left at T-junction. 600m further on the road surface becomes gravel. After 1.8km, you will see the sign for Kluitjieskraal offices. Turn left and follow the sign to the parking area. This is where the trail starts. Wolseley is approximately 120km from Cape Town. GPS: 33°25’33.5”S 19°10’49.7”E
