!Khwat ttu! The San Bushman Experience, Yzerfontein
The San Bushmen are the first inhabitants of South Africa. Their fascinating culture is on display at !Khwa ttu, the San Education and Culture Centre, just north of Cape Town, where you learn about their history, traditional knowledge, skills, languages, customs and current affairs. You will be led by a group of qualified San guides, who will take you through a truly exceptional experience.
!Khwat ttu is situated on an 850 ha nature reserve on the West Coast, where impeccably renovated old farm buildings house the project. It is a choice destination for the discerning tourist who wishes to meet and learn about South Africa’s First People while enjoying a beautiful natural setting in the unique West Coast Environment.
During a one and a half-hour tour the San will demonstrate their skills, share their ancient knowledge about oral history, tracking animals, lighting fires with sticks, using bows and arrows and identifying plants. They will also teach you words in some of their languages and enlighten you about recent achievements in obtaining their rights to land and intellectual property.
The visit will be rounded off by the guides’ description of some extraordinary aspects of the San’s social life such as the healing power of the trance dance and the traditional egalitarian society. These authentic accounts of San culture will create an unforgettable impression.
At the end of the tour the guides will familiarize you with the exhibition entitled “The San and the camera”. The artistic and informative display consists of eye-opening quotes, realistic life stories and explanatory texts, as well as historic and contemporary photographs.
There is a cosy restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner and a craft shop selling unique San-produced handcrafts including unique ostrich shell jewellery.
Open from 09h00 till 17h00 seven days a week. San-guided tours take place at 10h00 and 14h00.
