Jean Daneel Winery, Napier, Western Cape
It was a lucky day for Napier when Jean Daneel brought his family to the town.
Jean has become a well-known name for producing excellent wines. During his time at Buitenverwachting he won the Diners Club Winemaker of the Year in 1992 – specifically for the Buitenverwachting Merlot 1991. Jean then spent time at Morgenhof until 1999 but started making wines under his own label in ’97 – made on a Franschhoek property belonging to long-time friend, Gert Grobe. In 2005, he acquired property on the fringes of Napier and set up home, before building a cellar and planting experimental vineyards. The Jean Daneel label has blossomed, with the Directors Signature 2006 topping the Wine magazine Chenin Blanc Challenge in 2008.
Jean settled on Napier because of the cold climate along the coast of L’Agulhas where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, and the fact that the Elim farms were already firmly established as top producers, especially in Sauvignon Blanc.
Eldest son, Jean-Pierre joined the family business and is now firmly ensconced in the seat as winemaker of JD wines with the JD, Signature and Directors Signature labels in his hands. Jean himself will make the wines strictly from Napier from the family farm, Domaine Daneel. Great excitement for him as a spanking new label, Wine of Origin Napier is in the design.
Next door, Jean’s wife Renée runs The Larder, a deli which stocks cheeses, breads and charcuterie. The restaurant Renéessance, also run by Renée, is a stylish, yet unashamedly relaxed, space. Find out about these special places.
The best tables are on the wrap-around veranda on warm summer evenings. The ever-changing menu features Mediterranean-inspired dishes, which make excellent use of seasonal ingredients.
