Ithala Game Reserve, Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal

Ithala Game Reserve, Zululand

The magnificent Ithala Game Reserve in Zululand is home to some of the world’s oldest rock formations, dating back to nearly 3000 million years. The reserve is also home to an incredible diversity of terrain, vegetation, flora and fauna.

The terrain here tumbles from the heights of the Ngotshe mountains, a thousand metres down into the Pongolo river valley. The varied vegetation over this terrain extends from lowveld, to densely forested riverine valleys, to high-lying grassland plateaus. These habitats play host to a spectacular array of wildlife species.

The reserve is perhaps best known for its archaeological wonders, and there are many sites of early stone age activity here. There are also sites containing evidence of the Nguni people’s use of iron here. Historically, the reserve has provided the setting for many important events, such as Shaka’s reign as Zulu king.

Excellent accommodation at: Ntshondwe Resort, Ntshondwe Lodge, Mhlangeni Bush Camp, Mbizo Bush Camp and Thalu Bush Camp. More information. Online booking.
