Iona Wine Estate, Elgin, Overberg

Iona Wine Estate, Elgin, Overberg

The Iona Wine Estate vineyards are on a mountain plateau 420 metres high, and here in South Africa, these cool sites are scarce. The climate and elevated terroir mean that the grapes ripen up to two months later than the Cape Winelands, and are in perfect balance. Iona is South Africa’s coolest vineyard site.

Iona, conveniently situated on the link road from Grabouw to the Whale Coast, is surrounded by the world heritage site, Kogelberg Nature Reserve Biosphere and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean.

Iona Wine Estate, Elgin, Overberg

Andrew Gunn and family acquired this beautiful, but run-down apple farm in 1997. It was renamed “IONA” after the remote, island off the west coast of Scotland, from where the family can trace their ancestry to the Vikings that landed in Scotland in the 900s, hence the Viking longboat emblem on the labels.

A small team of highly motivated people runs Iona. When this property was revived as a wine farm in the late 1990s, it was at low ebb, as were the workers. The Gunns decided to share the ownership and the responsibilities of the farm with the permanent team. Today, everyone is proud to be an important part of Iona and the awards reflect this pride.

Since the first release in 2001, the wines of Iona have quickly made a name as being among the finest in the world. Some of the awards:

Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2010, 4½ stars John Platter, 5 star nomination; Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2009, 4½ Stars John Platter, Selected for the 2011 Nederburg Auction; Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2008, 4½ stars John Platter; Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Double Trophy Winner at the International Wine Challenge, London: South Africa’s Best White Wine, and Best Sauvignon Blanc, 4½ stars John Platter; Iona Sauvignon Blanc 2006, SAA First Class, 4½ stars John Platter, 4 stars Wine Magazine, 91 points Stephen Tanzer and the list goes on ……
