Hole-in-the-Wall Hiking Trail, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

The majestic feature of Hole-in-the-Wall, Eastern CapeThe Hole-in-the-Wall Hiking trail is another of the Wild Coast’s spectacular slackpacking trails. This 5-day trail is set in an area known as the Eden of the Wild Coast, which holds some clue as to the natural beauty of the region, as the Wild Coast in its entirety is renowned for being one of the most beautiful areas of South Africa.

Hole-in-the Wall is regarded as one of the most fascinating coastal rock-formations in the country and is a geographical spectacle. Hikers are able to walk out to it at low-tide, which is a popular activity along this hike. Hikers are also able to search for shells and laze about on the shores of the tidal estuary during low tide.

But, as with any Wild Coast trail, there is sure to be more than one attraction that will stand out at the end of the hiker’s journey. Take in the tranquility of magnificent coastal estuaries and unique mangrove swamps. Stand in awe of the majestic sea-cliffs and put yourself in the shoes of a Xhosa cattle herder along the characteristic rolling hilltops of the Eastern Cape.

The Xhosa guides are unbelievably friendly and as always are there to share their wealth of knowledge of the local communities and culture with you.

Getting there: Wild Coast Holiday Reservations offers transfers from East London to the start of the trail. See ‘trail info’.
