Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, Hoedspruit, Limpopo
Considered a ‘must-visit’ in the area, the mission of the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre is the conservation of rare, vulnerable, or endangered species, with a focus on cheetahs.
This mission is achieved through breeding programmes and the release of captive-bred cheetahs to the wild, treatment, and rehabilitation of orphaned and injured animals, and educational programmes.
The Centre is maintained through student programmes and eco-tourism initiatives aimed at wildlife and adventure enthusiasts, and it offers an amazingly personal experience of Africa’s wildlife that is ideal for families and a perfect complement to a large game park safari where you may or may not see certain species.
In addition to the cheetahs, the Centre is home to many species of indigenous and some exotic species in need of care and rehabilitation, from blue cranes to black-footed African cats to rhino and elephant.
Eco-tourism initiatives include ‘up close and personal guided tours of the Centre and all the animals there in addition to open vehicle safaris, which depart on the hour. Elephant back safaris are also offered in the early mornings, and this can be followed by lunch at the ‘Vulture Restaurant’ where you can see various species of vulture, drawn there by carcasses fed them when available. ‘Cheetah runs’ can be booked 2 days in advance, and photographic tours are also offered.
The Centre also runs volunteer and work programmes.
