Hiking at the KlipKop Wildlife Sanctuary, Pretoria
The Klipkop Wildlife Sanctuary near Pretoria is a 2200ha nature conservancy set up specifically by an association of landowners for the protection of a Brakenfeld grassland biome.
Brakenfeld is the second most bio-diverse biome in South Africa after Fynbos, with a unique set of flora and fauna that is distinct from that of the Savannah and golden grasslands more commonly associated with the Gauteng Highveld. Brakenfeld is ‘transitional’ grassland and is found between the high altitude grasslands and the lower bush scrubland. It is becoming increasingly rare due to human encroachment.
Hiking in the Klipkop Sanctuary
Klipkop offers two easy walking guided trails. The 15km Verfkop traail and the 18km Tweedragt trail are available year round, though the green of the spring and summer months, not to mention the warmer weather (the Highveld can get very dry and cold in winter) makes it particularly attractive between October and April.
Animals that can be seen include many species of bird, giraffe, various antelope species, from the large Eland and Kudu, to the beautiful white faced Besbuck, down to very rare Oribi that can survive nowhere else but in this mid-altitude grassland, and the little Duiker. Other animals on the conservancy include ‘smaller’ predators such as Rooikat (African caracal), Black-backed Jackals and Brown Hyena.
Overnight accommodation is available in the conservancy, with a swimming pool, braai facilities and deck for sundowners and game viewing.
