Hennops Hiking Trail, Hartbeespoort Dam

Hennops Hiking Trail, Hennops River, Hartbeespoort Dam Area

The Hennops Hiking Trail is a gem so close to the urban areas of Sandton and Pretoria. Situated at the Hennops Picnic Spot and Hiking Trail, on the pristine 750ha farm, Skurweberg, the trails meander along the Hennops River at the start and finish, and head off into the surrounding mountains with its bushy terrain, gorges and spectacular views.

There are two hikes of average difficulty, from which to choose. The Zebra Route, 5km and 2 hours, wanders through the fenced game camp at the north of the farm, working steadily up the mountain slopes before returning to the start. Besides game, you may also see “Zonkies”, zebra x donkeys. The Krokodilberg Route, 10km and 5 hours, starts along the river and leads to an overhand where the Boers set up a field hospital during the Boer War to treat their wounded. Then you cross the Hennops River and a steady ascent leads to two view points and descends to an old dolomite mine and lime oven. From here it is an easy walk back to the river where a suspension bridge and a pulley operated cable car are fun crossings. Expect some good birdlife but please note that there are no water points, so take your own.

The third route is the Dasie trail that offers parents the opportunity to introduce their children to hiking. It follows the same route as Krokodilberg to start but returns at no. 6 (Pruimpie se gat) to the cable car on the escape route”

All trails set out from the Hadeda Camp. The nearby Hennops Picnic Spot offers hikers additional braai facilities and swimming pools.
