Haga-Haga, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

The breathtaking resort town of Haga-Haga, Eastern CapeThe town of Haga-Haga on the Eastern Cape’s Wild Coast lies in a secluded bay, with breathtaking coastal cliffs and long, white beaches on either side. Haga-Haga epitomises what the Wild Coast is all about: tranquility, unspoilt coastline, unrivaled scenery and for the visitor, the chance to escape life as they know it and completely immerse themselves in the beauty of this magical stretch of coastline.

The village of Haga-Haga was established as an agricultural village in the 1920’s when farmers established winter grazing grounds here for their livestock, as the Wild Coast vegetation remained lush all year-round, and continues to do so. The interesting theory as to how this village derived its name comes from the Xhosa word ‘Haka Haka’ which means, ‘to hook on’: to cross beaches in the area in order to reach coastal grazing grounds, farmers would hook one team of cattle on to another, to ensure safe crossing.

Haga-Haga, as a tourist destination, is another of the Wild Coast’s family and adventure activity centres. Almost every Wild Coast town offers access to the most unspoilt beaches in the country, as well as estuaries and coastal forests that can be explored, all within a day. A safe, friendly and tranquil holiday environment is what rates Haga-Haga as one of South Africa’s best kept family holiday secrets.

Getting there: from East London, take the N2 going towards Umtata. Turn off at the R349, keep right at the split and follow the the road, which is signposted, into the town of Haga-Haga.
