Grey Rhebok or Kranskloof Hiking Trail, Carolina

Rock Waterslide, Kranskloof Hiking Trail, Carolina, Mpumalanga, CarolinaThe Kranskloof Hiking Trail near Carolina on the Mpumalanga Highveld, used to be a 2 day circular trail but has recently been changed to comprise of 3 base camp day trails all starting and ending at the Kranskloof Camp:

The 10km Kranskloof Trail features forest, kloof, stream rock pools and waterfalls.

The Aloe Trail takes you to the Komati Gorge Lodge where you can enjoy a drink or two at the bar before heading back to the Kranskloof Camp.

The Ruins Trail is the shortest and includes the ruins of ancient ‘kraals’.

The region is scenically lovely and interesting, with plateaus, gorges, streams, rock pools, waterfalls, veld grasslands and patches of lush indigenous forest in the gorges, or ‘kloofs’ as they are called, and all three trails make the most of the area’s natural beauty, vegetation, fauna and flora, including an endemic antelope called the Grey Rhebok (Vaal Reebok) and plenty of bird life.

The Kranskloof Camp is built of stone and tucked away in indigenous forest with a nearby waterfall rock pool to serve as a ‘natural swimming pool’. There is no electricity, basic amenities, donkey boilers for hot water, a braai area and lapa. The camp caters for a maximum of 24 people.
