Glider Flying Worcester Airfield

Cape Gliding Club If you enjoy gliding, then the Cape Gliding Club in Worcester is the only glider flying airfield in the Cape. This non-profit organisation is dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of soaring in the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

The Cape Gliding Club owns a whole range of one or two-seater glider planes, a towing aircraft and a tarred runway. Flying activities are usually limited to the weekends and public holidays only, except at year end when gliding is operational daily. Visitors are welcome and can, under the supervision of a teacher, try flying themselves, or, better still, can start soaring lessons under the guidance of the RAASA licensed instructors. Thermal winds and weather conditions in the Breede River Valley are excellent most of the year.

The club has a dedicated team of qualified tug pilots and instructors who offer their time free of charge to provide affordable tuition for beginners and advanced students, as well as air experience flights.

Summer gliding begins at about 10h00 and ends at sundown, after which flyers gather in the clubhouse for a drink and a lively discussion on the day’s flights.

Directions: From Cape Town take the N1 northwards and on exiting the tunnel take the first available right turn to “Rawsonville”. A few kilometers further on take the next right turn, once again for “Rawsonville”. At the “T” intersection stop street at Rawsonville Main Road, turn right and head on through the village, taking care not to exceed the speed restrictions.

Approximately 10km further on, after passing various farms and wineries, you will reach “Nekkies Resort”, where you must take a 90 degree left turn and pass over the Breede River bridge. Two kilometers further on, where there is a clump of Blue gum trees and a horse riding club, turn left.

There is a small sign which says “airfield” and another small sign which says “Cape Gliding Club”. One kilometer further on you will be at the airfield gate – drive straight in. Ask for the “Duty Pilot”, as he will make you feel at home.
