Gary Player Country Club, Sun City, South Africa
The Gary Player Country Club golf course is part of the giant Sun City entertainment complex situated in the Pilanesberg Mountains near Rustenburg in the North West Province, South Africa. The course was built in 1978 to be one of the top courses in the world. Of-course Gary Player was retained to design the course and the result is one of the longest in the world at 7000 metres. It is ranked among the top hundred courses in the world outside of the USA and was number 1 in South Africa in 2009.
The biggest golf tournament in South Africa, the Million Dollar Challenge is held here in December every year. Only the top golfers in the world are invited. Jack Nicklauss, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Tiger Woods among many others have found the course to be a real test of their prowess.
This magnificent course, set in an extinct volcanic crater in the African bush with the incredible Sun City with its lakes and tropical gardens as backdrop, is a site to behold. The fairways are planted with Kikuyu and the large undulating bent grass greens are sand-based and protected by strategically placed bunkers. The course is a green oasis in the African veld.
An amazing golfing experience can be combined with an equally amazing holiday experience in Sun City and the Pilanesberg National Park, one of the best big five game reserves in the country.
