Garden Castle Nature Reserve, Drakenberg, KwaZulu-Natal
Garden Castle Nature Reserve is in the southernmost part of the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a world heritage site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The reserve is over 35000ha in extent and is dominated by the soaring peak of the Rhino Horn (3051m). The reserve is characterized by unusual sandstone buttresses and many interesting formations.
Nearby towns are Himeville and Underberg.
The beautiful Busman’s Nek Valley with numerous caves and sandstone features lies within the reserve and boasts some of the best examples of San rock art. There are many hiking trails in the area from easy to challenging including climbing the Rhino Horn – 18 km of tracks and steep ledges.
There are ten rustic campsites in the reserve.
Getting there: take the R617 from Pietermaritrzburg to Underberg then onto the MR317 district road to Drakensberg Gardens (5km from Underberg). This road ends at the gate. Follow the signs to the reserve.
