Fishing at Umhlanga Rocks, North Coast, Kwazulu-Natal

Fishing from the rocks at UmhlangaFrom the lagoon to the main bathing area, there is a long stretch of beach with rocks in the surf zone. Here, fishermen can catch shad, kob, stumpnose and smaller fishes such as galjoen.

South of the bathing beach there is a rocky area that extends past the lighthouse. The water here is shallow among the rocks and catches are restricted to shad, blacktail and karanteen. There is deep water in front of the rocks around the lighthouse and this is an excellent spot for Natal stumpnose and shad. Kob, pompano and dusky sharks can also be caught here.

La Lucia Wreck is also a well-known fishing spot here, excellent for shad and garrick.

Tips for fishermen:

The spots can be crowded here, and fishing a crowded spot takes a little experience. Locals tend to have a dim view of those who cast over their lines, so try to fish in an uncrowded spot if you can.

Getting there: Umhlanga is 20 mins drive north of Durban on the N2.
