Fishing at the Bloemhof Dam

The Bloemhof Dam on the Vaal River is one of the largest dams in South Africa, and renowned for excellent angling. The dam is a massive 25000ha in its full extent.

The prize catches at the Bloemhof Dam are Golden Carp and Sharptooth Barbel (Catfish). Nightfishing is popular and there are campsite and chalets near the dam in the ‘angling area’ below the dam wall.

Annual Competitions include the Bloemhof Bonanza and the Tri–Nations.

Fishing is year round, and night and evening shore angling is very popular!

There are camping facilities both above and below the dam wall – at the Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve (access via Bloemhof on the N12) and the Sandveld Nature Reserve (access via Hoopstad in the Free State).

The bush areas around the dam are known for excellent game sightings and the bush and dam are renowned birding areas, so there is something for everyone – don’t hesitate to haul the family along on your fishing weekend.

Getting there: Via the R34 from Hoopstad in the Free State (Sandveld Reserev) or Bloemhof on the N12 in the North West
