Fishing at Richard’s Bay, North Coast, Kwazulu-Natal

Fishing off the shore at Richard's Bay, Kwazulu-NatalThe Richard’s Bay harbour attracts many anglers every year. Fishing is normally done here from the northern breakwater of the harbour. When the waves break here, they can be dangerous, and a gaff is needed to land a fish. Light-tackle enthusiasts can fish from boats in the main channel of the harbour, and catch kob, shad, grunter and stumpnose.

Zambezi sharks are also common catches in the harbour area, and the Oceanographic Research Institute has shown that the sharks move into these waters at night. North of the harbour, there is a series of long beaches, and surf-fishing here can produce catches of kob, kingfish and grunter.

Tips for fishermen:

Do not take the shark and crocodile warnings in the harbour area lightly.

Getting there: from Durban, take the N2 going north to Richard’s Bay.
