Fishing at Coffee Bay, Wild Coast, Eastern Cape

A remote spot for fishing at Coffee Bay, Wild Coast, Eastern CapeCoffee Bay is a great spot for shore angling, which also makes it a popular spot for daring fisherman to try their luck with the famed catch of kob by night.

Between Mapuzi point and the main beach there is a section of rocky coastline that is home to quite a few well-known spots. Kelly’s Rock and Frank’s Rock produce fish such as bronze bream, galjoen, zebra and kob, and the gullies between them offer good light-tackle fishing for all these fish types.

Sugarloaf Point forms a reef that runs far into the bay. This is a great spot to fish for gully fish at low tide, but at high tide the water tends to get very rough and the rocks become unfishable.

Across the Bomvu River, Du Toit’s point is one of the most deceptively dangerous places to fish along the Wild Coast. It is a deep water spot that is known for its great catches of garrick, shad and kingfish. Anglers who are new to this area should never fish here without the help of a local fisherman.

Getting there: from East London, take the N2 going towards Umtata. At Qunu, follow the signs to Coffee Bay. Excercise caution along these roads as roads may not always be highly maintained.
