Eselfontein Farm Mountain Bike Trails, Ceres

Eselfontein Farm MTB Route, CeresAbout an hour-and-a-half from Cape Town, in the foothills of the Ceres Mountains, is beautiful Eselfontein. This historical farmstead has an abundance of indigenous wildlife such as suurpootjie tortoises, fish eagles, baboons and buck, as well as the ever-elusive leopard.

More importantly, Eselfontein is home to one of the best single track MTB trails in the country. The 70km trail is 80% single track, which goes up and up and up and often, radically down and all of it bears the signature of someone who rides – in this case, one Deon Malherbe, on whose family farm, this great wonder of the MTB world exists.

“The “Ceres ride” is the most taxing, the most beautiful and the most satisfying mountain bike event on the Western Province fun calendar. I would like to suggest that it would hold its own anywhere in the country”

Steve Shapiro – Ride Magazine

There are also some less demanding routes for the less fit of 40/25/15kms. The various routes are open for day and weekend trail riders throughout the year (day trippers need to get a R30 permit at Erica’s Café in Ceres). Maps available.

Other adventure activities on the farm, for residents only, are hiking, horse riding, and on the dam, water-skiing, windsurfing, canoeing, air-chair, wake boarding and bass fishing. Trout fishing in the Titus River.

Eselfontein Farm MTB Route, ElevationsA self-catering adventure getaway, Eselfontein offers basic camping facilities with a braai area, showers and flushing toilets (bring your own tent for R50 per person), and huts made of bamboo and reeds for R80pp (sleeps two) – prices can change, so check on booking. Fresh braai packs, firewood, homemade bread and farm butter are available. Or, a fully equipped guest house (6 people – R1300.00 per night: 8 people – R1500.00 per night: 10 people – R1850.00 per night).
