Enseleni Nature Reserve, Richards Bay, Zululand
Enseleni Nature Reserve, established in 1948, is a 293 ha reserve between the towns of Richards Bay and Empangeni in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. The Nseleni River winds its way through the reserve eventually draining into the Nsesi Lake near Richards Bay.
The reserve is particularly popular amongst serious bird watchers. If you you’re looking to tick the some interesting birds like the African Finfoot, purple crested turaco, Pels’ fishing owl and the white-bearded barbet, then this is the place for you. There are also wildebeest, giraffe and zebra.
There are two hiking trails in the reserve – the Nkonkoni and the Mvubu, 7 km and 5 km long respectively. They wind through the swamp forest and there are some great picnic spots as well as an activity centre en-route. There is a small entrance fee.
Getting there: continue on the N2 past Richards Bay and Empangeni. The highway actually dissects the park.
