Drive the Cape Flower Route, West Coast and Namaqualand

Drive the Cape Flower Route

The wild flowers of the Cape West Coast and Namaqualand, in South Africa, are regarded as a botanical wonderland. Tourists, photographers and botanists are attracted to this spring spectacle in droves. Over 6000 plant species, from the daisy types along the coast, to the bulbs and succulents in Namaqualand, offer such variety, that around each corner lies a new surprise.

To top it all, the flowers are situated in context to some of the best of what South Africa has to offer – the quaint West Coast villages with laid back hospitality and fantastic fresh seafood; the amazing rock formations in the Cederberg Mountains; rock art sites and an excellent wine route.

The flowers make their appearance in late July in the North and roll out southwards, with the season finishing in the south in September. The exact dates and whereabouts of the flowers is determined by the amount of rainfall during the winter, the wind and sun. The tourism offices in the area all have the latest info on where the best spots are, in real time.

Read the detailed Self-drive Flower Route, which will give you all you need to know, to plan your trip.
