De Beers Diamond Coast 4×4 Tours, Northern Cape Coast
The De Beers Mining Company offers two 4×4 tours that venture into restricted and otherwise inaccessible areas of the Diamond Coast – still actively mined for diamonds and other mineral resources.
Only recently opened up to the public, these areas were all but unknown. They were strictly guarded, and the result is nature untouched by tourism and intact archeological and fossil treasures.
The coastline between Koingnaas and Kleinzee is as renowned for its ship-wrecks as Namibia’s Skeleton Coast further north, and the 4 hr Shipwreck Route 4×4 tour takes you along this stretch of coast to view rusted hulks of ships – each with a story to tell of how they ended up there, when, who made it…and who didn’t. In addition to the wrecks there are several middens. The terrain is rocky and over dunes.
The Strandveld Route 4X4 Tour takes you into a 30 000ha private game reserve owned by De Beers and rich with fauna and flora – in particular a huge variety of succulent plants. This area is pristine and is an example of coastal nature relatively untouched by development or the footprints of tourism. This tour features 4×4 over spectacular dunes that are vegetation free and simply beckoning 4×4 fun!
A third tour offered is the World of Diamonds Mine Tour – transport is provided for this tour. No children under 16 and no pregnant women may participate.
All tours are guided by THETA registered 4×4 Tour Guides. A minimum of 8 people are required.
Getting there: Kleinzee is found at the end of the R355. From There is a landing strip there for private aircraft. From Cape Town, take the N7 to Springbok. From Springbok take the R355 all the way west to the coast. Total travelling distance is 666km. Contact De Beers Coast of Diamonds to make arrangements first.
