Cobham State Forest, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal

Cobham State Forest, Drakensberg, KwaZulu-NatalCobham State Forest is a 52000ha nature reserve in the southern part of the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, the world heritage site in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The nearest town is the small village of Himeville, about 150-km from Pietermaritzburg and which also happens to be the gateway to the Sani Pass into neighbouring Lesotho.

The reserve is characterized by extensive grassland plains and indigenous forests at the foot of the Drakensberg Mountain Range and is dominated by the Hodgson’s Peaks including the Giant’s Cup. This is a particularly beautiful part of the Drakensberg region with numerous streams and lakes making it a mecca for fly fishing and hiking.

The Mzinkulu Wilderness Area and the Mzimkulwana Nature Reserve form part of the State Forest. There are trail huts and basic camp sites in the reserve. Hikers are likely to come across herds of Eland as well as the Cape Clawless Otter.

The reserve is also well known for the annual Splashy Fen Music Festival which takes place on the farm of the same name.
