Botsalano Game Reserve
The Botsalano Game Reserve is situated on the border between South Africa’s North-West Province and Botswana, between Zeerust and Mafikeng. The 5800ha reserve is primarily a breeding centre for rare and endangered game, including white rhino and is run by the North West Parks Board.
The reserve’s primary biome is Kalahari thornveld, dotted with camelthorn trees, and in addition to several species of plains game, the reserve has over 200 species of bird, including raptor species, ‘sociable weavers’ who build community nests in camelthorn trees and southern yellow-billed hornbills (see Mafikeng Birding Blog to see what other birds you can see in this area).
The reserve is open to day visitors for self-drive safaris as well as overnighters. Camping facilities are available, a well as a tented camp and other very basic bush camps. There are no large predators on the reserve, and many informal trails for hiking and MTB.
Getting there: From Mafikeng take the N18 north toward the Ramatlabana border post. Just shy of the border, turn right. Travel for 7km, then turn left and continue for a further 7km to the entrance to the Reserve.
