Bergsig Wine Estate, Breedekloof Wine Route, Western Cape
Bergsig Wine Estate is situated where the Drakenstein and Hex River Mountains meet in the Breede River Valley. The estate has been in the Lategan family since 1843 when the first wines were planted. Today all the responsibilities are shared by members of the family.
The estate is committed to conservation of the indigenous flora and fauna and their initiatives form part of their business plan. It was the first estate in the Breedekloof area to join the Wine and Biodiversity initiative .
The location is perfect for growing a variety of grapes because of the many microclimates and soil conditions on the farm. The winery produces a large range of red and white wines as well as port and sparkling wine – sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc, cabernet sauvignon, pinotage, gewurtztraminer and the LBV port and have all won gold and silver medals at Veritas and Michelangelo International Wine Awards.
A number of birdwatching days are held each year, which to date have yielded 132 different species, as a result of the varied landscape. A number of new species, not previously seen on the farm, are also now putting in an appearance, such as Hadeda, Marshall Eagle and the Fish Eagle.
The Bergsig Bistro has beautiful views over the vineyards and is open daily for breakfast and lunch and tea. Private functions can also be arranged and full facilities are available for small conferences.
