Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate, Helderberg
Avontuur Wine and Thoroughbred Estate is situated at the foot of the Helderberg Mountains right between Stellenbosch and Somerset West. In addition to producing award winning wines the estate is also a Thoroughbred race horse stud of note.
The estate has 100Ha under vine, 65% of which are planted for reds and the balance for white varietals.
Avontuur’s premier range of wines bears testimony to four of the finest horses to have passed through the farm. Baccarat (Bordeaux blend), Luna de Miel (Chardonnay Reserve), Sarabande (Sauvignon Blanc Reserve), Above Royalty (Noble Late Harvest) and Minelli (Pinot Noir Reserve) live on in the wonderful wines which are nurtured in the cellars. In addition to the excellent wines the estate also produces a 10 year old brandy.
The stud farm forms an integral part of the estate and many of the top horses have their origins at the stud. It is home to European sprinter VAR, who has been covering some of South Africa’s top broodmares from 2005 onwards, his progeny have been breaking sprint records country-wide from 2009. VAR was crowned the Leading 2nd Season Sire at the 2009 National Yearling Sales and was also the leading sire of 2-y-o’s in SA in 2009.
The estate organizes a number of activities in addition to wine tasting – stud farm tours, vineyard and cellar tours, the harvest festival during February and March and wine blending as well as gourmet meals in the estate restaurant.
