Angel’s Wing Hiking Trail, Clarens, Free State
Named for one of the sandstone peaks on the trail, the 2 day 19.5km Angel’s Wing Hiking Trail near Clarens could be named for the freedom hikers have from having to carry laden backpacks on the main hike. Angel’s Wing is ‘base camp’ hike, with the main hike starting an ending at the well-kitted out overnight hut under a sandstone overhang – Ouma’s Kraal.
This is a 2 day Hike, but you will need to schedule 3 days for it.
On Day One you are taken up to Ouma’s Kraal from the Sunnyside Guest Farm for night 1. There is no hiking on Day One, just enjoying the surroundings.
Day Two is the main Hike – a gentle 11.5 km hike up through and under colourful sandstone formations, interspersed by waterfalls, across gurgling mountain streams and rock pools. The total ascent from Ouma’s Kraal is only 300m, but you will still be able to enjoy 360 mountain views of the Malutis, Golden Gate National Park, Rooiberg, Witteberg Ranges and the Drakensberg in the far north-east.
Day Two ends with a refreshing dip in a big clear rock pool near the hut and a braai at the lapa.
Day Three is a 8km hike back down to the farm, where you are invited to stay for a braai and picnic.

Getting there: Take the R712 from Clarens towards the Golden Gate National Park. Look for the turn off to the Sunnyside Guest Farm on your right after about 12.5km.
