Amatikulu Nature Reserve, Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal

Amatikulu Nature Reserve, Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal

Amatikulu Nature Reserve is situated between the Tugela and the Amatikulu Rivers on the North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal approximately 100 km from Durban. The reserve includes the estuarine areas of the two rivers and the joint mouths of the Amatikulu and Inyoni Rivers. The vegetation within the reserve is very diverse – the beach and dunes, coastal dune forest, river bank vegetation, swamp forest, acacia woodland and grasslands.

The reserve is one of the few in the country where you can see animals feeding on the forested dunes overlooking the beach. It is possible for visitors to go on their own self-guided walks or game drives. Canoeing on the estuary and rivers is popular and fishing can be extremely rewarding. It is a well known fishing area for mullet, rock salmon, springer, kingfish and perch.

Beware of crocodiles and visitors are warned not to swim in the rivers or drink the water because of the presence of bilharzia.

The following mammals are present in the reserve: Cape clawless otter, common duiker, giraffe, impala, large-spotted genet, reedbuck, serval, water mongoose, waterbuck, zebra and the usual monkeys.

There is a tented camp built on wooden platforms overlooking the river and with a panoramic view over the sea. It is self-catering but is serviced daily. There is a communal ablution block with hot showers, toilets and hand basins. The communal kitchen has cutlery and crockery as well as a freezer and stove. There is also a braai area.
