Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, Natal Midlands

Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg

Alexandra Park is the green lung of the city of Pietermaritzburg in the Natal Midlands. The park provides the perfect recreational area and facilitates cycling, soccer, swimming and cricket which can be watched from the beautiful Victorian pavilion built in 1898. The pavilion is a national monument and houses a bandstand and a coffee shop where you can enjoy a light meal. The pavilion is also the headquarters of the KwaZulu-Natal Inland Cricket Union.

This 85ha park straddles the Msunduzi River where the world famous Duzi Canoe Marathon is held every year. A number of regular exhibitions are held in the park including the popular Art in the Park where local artists exhibit their art, and Cars in the Park where vintage cars are displayed. On the first Sunday of every month the Oval Craft Market is held on the cricket oval.

Picnic and braai facilities are available and the many tree-lined paths provide an ideal venue for evening strolls from where you can enjoy the magnificent rock and rose gardens.
