Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park
On the border of South Africa and Namibia is a park that could be mistaken for the end of the world. This little corner of the country is a moonscape of sawtooth mountains, sharp gravel and alluvial diamond deposits.
The Richtersveld is home to some of the world’s richest and strangest desert flora – among them halfmens, botterbooms, quiver trees and stone plants. The sight of the Orange River slipping silently between parched peaks is equally as strange.
The Ai-Ais Fish River Canyon Park – almost three times as large as the Richtersveld – in Namibia and the Richtersveld are linked by a pontoon at Sendelingsdrif, and they form the Transfronteir Park. Visitors to the Namibian side can visit the thermal hot-springs, and hike through the Fish River Canyon, a vast chasm cut through the desert. The hiking trail is only open May through September, as summer temperatures frequently rise above 45 degrees celcius. Read full article. Visit Sanparks website: Ai-Ais Richterveld National Park.
