The just-published rules on guided and walking tours

Guided tours, both in vehicles and as walking tours, have their own set of lockdown rules as of Thursday morning.

New regulations gazetted by tourism minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane put the finishing touches on changes that now allow couples to share rooms when they travel for leisure (as long as they don’t cross a provincial boundary or go hunting) – and that make guided tours legal again.

As in may other sectors, tour operators are now required to keep detailed records, including ID numbers and telephone numbers, of participants, and those must be handed over to the government on demand.

Tour guides, or technically “a person managing a guided tour”, are also made responsible for keeping their guests safe, should anyone in a group have the coronavirus.

Their duties include:

• making sure everyone wears a mask all the time, except when eating and drinking
• sanitising guests before they get into any vehicle, and providing sanitiser “for frequent use” during an excursion
• making sure everyone stays at least 1.5 metres away from one another when on foot
• keeping the windows in vehicles open at least 5cm.

Where snacks or water is provided, everything must be pre-packaged, and containers, bottles, and utensils must all be disposable.
