Devastating fire at Monkey Town, Somerset West
Last night was a devastating evening for Monkey Town when a fire broke out and the animal enclosures burned down as well as the restaurant on site.
A fire burnt down the restaurant at a Western Cape monkey sanctuary early on Friday, December 14 2018. City of Cape Town fire and rescue spokesman Edward Bosch said the alarm was raised at 11pm on Thursday. By the time firefighters reached Monkey Town in Somerset West, the restaurant was well alight. – Times Live
Around 3am this morning it was reported by NARI that the fire flared up again, “We are still dealing with the fire at the moment. Fire just flared up again.”
Monkey Town is a Primate Centre on the N2 highway, home to over 250 monkeys and many other animals such as reptiles, donkeys and alpaca’s, of which were saved from the fire.
This morning around 5am Monkey Town reported:
“Please note: we don’t have electricity and that also means no phones at the moment. Please send an email if you need to get in contact with us. We’ll try to get back to everyone in due time. We are all in shock as to what happened here last night. It was terrifying.”
