women are often trapped in violent relationships due to the fact that they have nowhere else to go

Safe House L’Abrie do Dieu in Stellenbosch provides shelter for abused women & children who are victims of sexual and domestic abuse.

There is an extremely high incidence of domestic violence and violence against women in South Africa. Often the abuse is so violent that the victims need to escape it. Their children are also at risk and the family unit is at risk.

The Stellenbosch Magistrate Court has processed up to 800 applications per year for Family Violence Protection Orders since 2005. In 2009 it already went up to 1149 applications for the year. This means the need for our services is not diminishing – rather it is increasing on a daily basis.

The reality is…

1 in 4 women are in an abusive relationship

every 8 minutes a child is abused in South Africa

every 6 days a woman is killed by her intimate male partner

every 24 minutes a child is raped in South Africa

For too long women and children trapped in abusive households in the Greater Stellenbosch Municipal District had to face the violent reality of having nowhere to run. The Safe House fulfils this longstanding need of the community as the cries of these most vulnerable women have not fallen on deaf ears. It took three years of planning and research before the doors to the first Safe House in Stellenbosch- L’Abrie de Dieu (meaning “God’s Shelter”) were opened on 4 February 2008.
