The first school in Stellenbosch opened in 1683. Education began in earnest in 1859 with the opening of a seminary for the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1860 Rhenish Girls’ High School was established, the oldest school for girls in South Africa. Paul Roos Gymnasium was named after Paul Roos, on his retirement as the sixth rector of the school. He was the first captain of the national rugby side to be called the Springboks and an old boy of the school.

A Solid Infrastructure
The town’s infrastructure is coping at the moment with the huge demand. The Municipality is constantly engaging in talks with all stake holders to ensure Stellenbosch meets this ever growing demand in infrastructure. Currently affordable housing, upgrading of the sewerage system, extension of the dumping site, effective electricity supply, road works and clean rivers are the main focus in Stellenbosch. In the current financial year more than R144 million was allocated towards infrastructure projects. The “Adopt a River” programme in conjunction with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry was launched in October 2010. Work on the new Sludge De-watering Facility at Stellenbosch Wastewater Treatment Works was commissioned in November 2010 and the facility will be fully operational by June 2011.

Property in Stellenbosch
Stellenbosch offers a wide variety of property from farms, apartments, houses, vacant land, commercial properties to golf and lifestyle estates. Thanks to the University, Stellenbosch has a high percentage of investment properties, with apartments around campus very popular and other properties transformed into apartment style units. Although properties in some areas are relatively expensive, it is still possible to find a reasonably priced home in a good area.
The growth in Stellenbosch has changed the suburban landscape somewhat. New developments towards the Somerset West area has reached capacity in terms of municipal borders and the development shift is now towards Paarl. High Density Development in some areas will probably become a reality as the current developments are fast reaching the municipal borders.
