Fire and Fynbos Awareness Day in Stellenbosch 2013
The Fire and Fynbos Awareness Day 2013 was hosted by the Jonkershoek Volunteer Wildfire Services. The aim of this highly anticipated event is to make the public aware of our natural surroundings and how devastating wildfires can be to our fragile ecosystems. All the money raised from the event will be used by Volunteer Wildfire Services to continue to assist CapeNature and SANParks in suppressing fires outside of the city and in remote mountain areas .
The Awareness Day was held in Stellenbosch at Lievland Wine Estate on Saturday, 04 May 2013 and was a HUGE success!
The Vounteer Wildfire Services (VWS) pulled out all the stops with a helicopter display donated by Bird Dog Aviation. The children and adults got front row viewing of the helicopter filling it’s bucket with water to dump it on the mock fire.
The fun started early with a 6km fun run and 14km trail run, there was tree climbing, tree swinging, loads of spot prizes, food stalls, a snake display, tea garden, fire truck rides, firefighting display and of course the foam party!
The Volunteer Wildfire Services is a Non Profit Volunteer organisation and operate from three stations in the Western Cape, namely Newlands, Jonkershoek and South Peninsula. They rely on sponsorship and fund raising initiatives, like the Fire and Fynbos Awareness Day in Stellenbosch. All proceeds go to the VWS running costs, like training, equipping their members and transport to the fireline.
