Paris FC crowned as winners of the Msawawa Midway Cup
After winning every game to guarantee a spot in the championship, the Balfour-based team faced Phiri Lagos City in the finals.
Paris FC from Balfour Mpumalanga was crowned champions of the Msawawa Midway Soccer Tournament at Protea South grounds on Sunday, January 7.
In a soccer event honouring the Msawawa Midway soccer tournament’s fifth anniversary, 40 soccer teams from various provinces and Gauteng areas competed. The tournament started on December 16 and concluded on January 7.
Residents showed up in large numbers so as to show their support for their preferred teams.
After winning every game to guarantee a spot in the championship, the Balfour-based team faced Phiri Lagos City in the finals.
Both clubs drew 2-2 after 90 minutes of play in an exciting championship match, which ended with Paris FC defeating Phiri Lagos City 4-2 on penalties.
Paris FC coach, Bhuti Libisi said it was their first time participating in the Msawawa Midway tournament and winning meant a lot to them.
“My excitement for today’s game is mixed, but overall, I’m happy that we won. The boys put in a lot of effort to qualify for this tournament, and I’m delighted it paid off,” said Lubisi.
Paris FC got a first prize win of R150 000 while Phiri Lagos City secured second place walking away with R50 000.
According to the organiser of the tournament, Jabulani Motaung, the Msawawa Midway tournament is set to encourage young boys to not get distracted with substance abuse but to focus on building a bright future for themselves
