The Kliptown SAPS has taken a step forward in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) by hosting the first of what is expected to be several anti-GBV campaigns around the Kliptown Policing precinct. On Friday, the station teamed up with more than ten community organisations that are dedicated to fighting against GBV and social ills around Kliptown, Pimville and Eldorado Park. The combined effort was a push to raise awareness, educate and prevent GBV within these communities.
“GBV is a serious crime that we cannot allow to breed in our communities. Our aim is to educate and completely eradicate GBV from our areas. There is a lot that people do not know about how it affects you as a person and how it affects young children. That is some of the information that was shared today with the community,” said Captain Hitler Ngwenya of Kliptown SAPS.

The trek started at the Kliptown Police Station and proceeded along Beacon Road in Angola and Mandela Square informal settlement. As part of spreading education on GBV, approximately 600 flyers were also distributed to the community.
“We know that some people feel trapped under situations like domestic violence. Some feel that if they speak they will not be safe or taken seriously. This initiative is giving them the confidence that they can come to the station anytime. Even if domestic violence happened some years back, you can still open a case. There is a lot information that people need to know about GBV and so, we encourage that they come to the station to find out more,” Ngwenya added.
He also extended the station’s gratitude to everyone involved on the day.
“We are extremely proud to see the number of people who came out and reacted positively to this work. We want to thank everyone who came out of their home to join us, everyone who shared their stories with us and everyone who learned. We were also supported by the business community,” he said.
