Kiddies Hope Academy learners visit PIKITUP
The programme, according to Sithole has also helped instil a culture of cleanliness amongst children from an early age.
Children from Kiddies Hope Academy embarked on another educational tour last week to learn about recycling and taking care of the environment.
This time they visited the PIKITUP depot in Zondi where they were taught about waste management, different forms of recycling and caring for the environment.
The tour was the first one for the academy this year and it signalled the start of their career expo programme. This is where children learn about different careers and what it means to work in different industries.
Xolani Sithole from Kiddies Hope Academy said the educational tour was more than just to teach children about recycling but it was also about paying their respect to waste collectors.
“There are professions we don’t usually pay attention to but are very important. So we felt that it was also important to make our children aware of this profession and get them to learn about recycling and its importance to the environment and everyday life,” explained Sithole.
As part of the immersion, children put on their working gear and got their hands dirty working in waste collection. They also got a chance to see how recyclables are separated and prepared for processing.
The programme, according to Sithole has also helped instil a culture of cleanliness amongst children from an early age.
