About Lefa Mosea
Artist Name: Lefa Mosea
Saxophone player, singer, songwriter and producer
Genre: Contemporary Afro-Soul Jazz
Growing up in the Vaal Triangle (Sebokeng), South of Johannesburg, saxophonist Lefa Mosea used to travel to his uncle’s place in Pretoria every school holidays –and on the way, Lionel Richie’s Back to Front album was on blast.
This was Lefa’s introduction at the age of 11 years to the world of smooth soulful sounds of Motown, R&B and gospel.
At the age of 13 years the musical bug had bitten him and he enrolled for music theory and guitar lessons until his matric year. “I’ve always wanted to learn to play an instrument, saxophone to be specific but because I had to settle for my second best which is the guitar till I could afford the saxophone,” he explains.
It was in 2005 when he was a student at the Vusi Mahlasela Music Development Foundation at state theatre when he fell in love with jazz and finally picked up the saxophone and never looked back.
Eleven years later, Lefa is inviting Africa to his world through his solo project released in April 2017.
The project took more than six months to record partly because: “I am perfectionist and that annoys me sometimes because things don’t get done on time. “ Lefa says.
Describing his style of music as Contemporary African Jazz his upcoming offering transcends traditional boundaries around musical styles, offering solid roots in jazz.
Set to dominate the charts is brand new single Amabele which is a song that pays tribute to people who choose hardship as a career and provide for their families despite financial challenges associated with this path.
Lefa had an honor of sharing the stage with some of South Africa’s established names in jazz such as Mam’ Sbongile Khumalo, Mxo, Asanda Bam, Pu2ma Tiso, Nomfusi to name just a few. In February 2017 he performed with Lira’s band.
He credits noted artists like Tshepo Tsola, Ringo Madlingosi, Steve Dyer for influencing his fluid yet fiery saxophone sounds.
His upcoming album represents an artistic triumph for Lefa who is already well-known as an ex member of TakeNote, a jazz band that was signed to Native Rhythms record label.
“I decided to do a solo project because I want people to recognise my talent .”
According to Lefa, jazz is not tempo based like a pop song: “ Jazz musicians are always painting a picture or telling a story to see the picture or hear the story through the instruments and the melodies.”
On Lefa’s music, he is having a conversation with his fans and giving them a glimpse of his life’s highs and lows.
Some of his lows includes rejection as he knocks on every door trying to go solo, including from his peers, but that has never stop him from going forward.
Although his music takes up most of his time, he does fit in family and friends in schedule. He also likes to binge on series and movies. “I could binge the whole weekend if I have good movies and series. Anything dramatic or thriller vibes I am in.”
After more that 13 years of performing Lefa’s main priority is to promote his upcoming music project, tour West Africa and grow his songwriting and producing business.
“I want some of my songs on Africa’s top charts. I want to commercialise my sound as much as I can without changing it.”
He attributes his longevity in the music industry to his motto: “Always play your heart out you never know who is watching.” Concludes Lefa Mosea
