Wupperthal, Cederberg, Western Cape

The little mission town of Wupperthal in the Cederberg lies in the peaceful Biedouw ValleyWupperthal lies in the heart of the barren Cederberg wilderness, 75km from Clanwilliam, and is a must visit for anyone travelling through the Cederberg Wilderness Area. Established as a Rhenish mission town in 1830, this quaint town in the Biedow Valley now exists as a Morovian mission town, having transferred to the Morovian church in 1966.

It would seem that there is little more to the town’s attraction other than its quaint, peaceful setting and the charm of the the little thatched mission houses. But the town is home to a famous shoe factory, producing ‘veldskoene’ (soft, leathery shoes) for the local farmers, and the shoe factory is certainly a worthwhile visit.

There are few more beautiful areas in the Cederberg than the Biedouw Valley in which to explore; see the amazing 4×4 trail that can take you to Wuppertal.

Getting there: from Cape Town, take the N7 to Clanwilliam. Here, take the R364/Pakhuis Pass into the Cederberg. Travel the pass until you see a turn off to your right going to Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve. Follow this road until it becomes the Blinkberg Pass, and continue into the village of Wupperthal.
