Yzerfontein

The quaint little beach village of Yzerfonein is a nature-lovers paradise. Take a walk along its ’16 mile’ beach, which spans the distance of coastline between Yzerfontein and the start of the Postberg Nature Reserve within the West Coast National Park near Langebaan. Spot whales between June and November, and coastal birds, on a leisurely stroll along this breath-taking stretch of coastline. Visit the West Coast National Park and the nearby bird colonies on Dassen Island.

During September and October, an abundance of spring flowers such as Arum Lilies, Wild Cinerarias, and dazzling white and orange Daisies can be seen in Yzerfontein. The town also boasts three indigenous gardens that can be visited throughout the year. The indigenous garden on Dassen Island Drive even has a maze.

Yzerfontein is a dream venue for anglers and the small boat harbour is a popular attraction. Fishermen angle from the beach and rocks, and (in season & with permits) can also collect mussels, catch crayfish and fish such as snoek, tuna or yellowtail. The Snoek Derby and the Crayfish Derby are very popular events with the keen fishermen.

Water sport enthusiasts from as far as Europe visit Yzerfontein on a regular basis. The small boat harbour allows the launching of boats and jetskis in restricted areas, while the wide shallow bay is popular with bodyboarders, kitesurfers and windsurfers. The weather conditions are ideal for water sports throughout the year. One of Yzerfontein’s hidden treasures is the area known as Pearl Bay which is situated on the quieter, wind­free side of town.

Hiking Trails in Yzerfontein: The 2km Schaap Island trail starts on the main beach and runs in a southerly direction towards the harbour. The 16 mile trail starts at the main beach and runs north along the beach towards the West Coast National Park.

Just south of Yzerfontein is Khwattu, the San Bushmen Cultural project where the discerning tourist can meet and learn about the San Bushmen.

Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town this tranquil and leisure-oriented spot on the West Coast is well worth a visit.

Getting there: from Cape Town, take the R27 going towards Langebaan. Turn off at the R315 and follow the road into Yzerfontein.Yzerfontein is a tranquil sea-side village, 80km north of Cape Town on the R27 and marks the start of the beautiful Cape West Coast.
