Velddrif

Velddrif on the Cape West Coast is situated on the mouth of the Berg River. This village is at the heart of the West Coast fishing industry and has attracted anglers for generations to fishing spots in the estuary and along the coast.

Boggom (small fish) are still dried along the banks of the Berg River. Recreational anglers can choose to fish off the banks of the Berg River, go out to sea in St Helena Bay, or try the surf from the long white beaches between Velddrif and Dwarskersbos.

This area is also very popular with birding enthusiasts. The site at the estuary of the Berg River is a proposed RAMSAR site. The hide and boardwalk is in the town, on the R399 towards Piketberg, and open from 09H00 to 21H00.

There is also excellent birding at the Rocherpan Nature Reserve, close to Velddrif. Accommodation has recently opened in the reserve.

To get to Velddrif, take the R27 from Cape Town for approximately 142 kms.
